Winner: Sunvale Community Park by Brimbank City Council
The $3.65 million Sunvale Community Park was officially opened September in 2018 funded by Brimbank City Council ($800,000), the Victorian Government ($2.6 million), and Melbourne Water ($150,000). The Victorian Government supported the development of the skate park by providing $100,000 from Sports and Recreation Victoria. Sunvale Community Park includes:
- a skate park & play spaces (including water play)
- a large, green ‘kick-a-ball’ space
- basketball ring and exercise equipment
- stormwater treatment system with sub-ground water storage for irrigation
- a large shelter for gatherings and events
- 100 additional trees
- The Five Elementsartworks created by local Aboriginal artists
- BBQ facilities, public toilets and an edible garden.

Sunvale Community Park represents the rebirth of the former Sunvale Primary School into a vital community asset. The new park was the outcome of a collaboration between the council and the community, creating a shared vision and, ultimately, a series of wonderful, unpretentious park uses and elements that have been adapted by users of all ages and social and cultural backgrounds. Effective water harvesting via a 100,000-litre underground tank and reuse of this critical resource enables year-round green lawns for ball games.
