Revegetation revitalises Lower Stony Creek
Stony Creek flows for 8 kilometres through the City of Maribyrnong. It arises in Braybrook, adjacent to Matthews Hill Reserve, and flows through parkland, industrial and residential areas of Tottenham and West Footscray then into Cruickshank Park and Yarraville. Here it enters the Yarra River near its confluence with the Maribyrnong River.
The Stony Creek area is a priceless refuge for indigenous vegetation and wildlife that once flourished throughout the Western Plains of Victoria. Through their hard work and enthusiasm, the Friends of Stony Creek have been instrumental in raising the profile of the area. They have built ponds and revegetated many parts of the creek, protecting and enhancing the habitat for wildlife, flora and fauna.
This project will build on the previously established escarpment shrubland and continue the creation of a habitat corridor along Stony Creek.
Through its Corridors of Green Program, Melbourne Water is funding Lower Stony Creek Revegetation to improve river health.
