Yarraville On the Nose Community Group Inc (YOTN) was formed in 2005 to take action to improve the air quality in Yarraville. YOTN has been a key player in the Brooklyn Community Representative Group, an EPA Victoria led forum for members of the community, industry, local and state government to discuss issues about the air quality of the general Brooklyn area.
Under its enforcement powers, EPA can take action to ensure businesses in Brooklyn are compliant with air quality regulations. EPA also has capacity to impose fines with funds directed to its Inspiring Environmental Solutions program, designed to support community projects for restoration or enhancement of the environment.
In 2011 Yarraville on the Nose successfully applied for $50,000 from the fund which was used, and matched, by Maribyrnong City Council to deliver planting of 300 semi-mature trees in 10 Yarraville streets. The vision for the project was to provide uniform avenues of street trees to provide a range of benefits for the community.
Benefits:
- Beautification
- Enhanced habitat
- Improved air quality
